Artist Adventure Series - Printmaking Under Sail

Once upon an early Spring weekend in April 2022, a group of ladies gathered on the deck of Eda Frandsen to come together in drawing, painting and printmaking beneath the most gorgeous quiet spring light. Early enough in the year that the anchorages of Helford and Turnaware bar were bare of other boats, when the sea was fresh and cold for morning swims, the coffee was piping hot and ethereal artist Mimi Robson led our team of printers in a range of monotype printing techniques.

A brisk first evening’s sail across the bay left time for gin and tonic on deck before the sun went down. Early risers swam first thing the next morning whilst others drew on deck to begin the first printmaking session. Mimi taught an introduction to intaglio tools and equipment, gradient rolling and transfer printing using her signature colour palette and Japanese - Zen-influenced approach to mark making.

We opted for a gentle afternoon sail to Ruan Lannihorne and a strong South Westerly gale on the forecast meant a full day of printing on Sunday before making our way to back Falmouth in the evening.

The first in our Artist Adventure series, Printmaking Under Sail was a beautiful weekend of like-minded people coming together to try their hand at new techniques in an entirely different surrounding. Eda’s saloon lent itself perfectly as a workshop/studio space and we hope there will be many more Artist Adventure voyages to come!
