Island Explorer Series: Canna
In this series, we hope to share a little bit more about what we think makes the islands we visit so special.
There is something magical about arriving by sea to one of Scotland’s most picturesque islands. Stepping ashore you’ll find yourself immediately immersed in the Isle of Canna’s fascinating history, abundant wildlife, and captivating landscapes. Below is a glimpse of what awaits you on this hidden gem of the Inner Hebrides—whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking to soak in the serenity of Scottish island life.
Part of the Small Isles archipelago (along with Rum, Eigg, and Muck), Canna lies on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, about 18 miles off the west coast of Scotland. Owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1981, this small island (roughly four miles long and a mile wide) is renowned for its birdlife, peaceful atmosphere, and unique cultural heritage. Despite its modest size, Canna offers a striking variety of landscapes—rugged cliffs, tranquil harbours, rolling pastures, and ancient ruins—each hinting at centuries of Gaelic traditions and human endeavour.
Despite its small footprint, Canna’s history runs deep. The island was once the home of the Gaelic folklorist John Lorne Campbell and his wife Margaret, who dedicated their lives to preserving Gaelic culture and language. Their extensive collection of folklore, songs, and oral histories is housed at Canna House, which is currently undergoing restoration at the hands of the National Trust for Scotland. You can read more about its restoration and the conservation of its collections here.
To get the most out of your visit, take one of the gentle walking routes that loop around the island. A popular choice is the circuit leading from Canna Harbour to Compass Hill—aptly named because the large basalt outcrop is said to affect compass readings—and then onwards through the crofting lands. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over to the nearby Small Isles and the chance to encounter wildlife up close.
Another popular walk explores the small neighbouring island of Sanday, home to Canna’s resident Puffin Colony! Follow the Land Rover track around the harbour and over the footbridge to Sanday, then locate the small hand-painted puffins signs, directing you to the sea stacks on the south-east corner of the island.
In 2025 it will be possible to book a 2-hour Ranger-led walk with Tom Allen, the National Trust Ranger for the island, on days when we plan to spend an afternoon there.
Please let us know at the start of your voyage if this is something you might be interested in.
This 2-hour tour follows the scenic coastal road to the early Christian cross and the historic settlement of A’Chill, before winding through the enchanting Canna House Woods. Along the way, participants will learn about the island's rich heritage, history, and future, as well as its incredible array of wildlife, from seabirds to marine life. With the help of provided binoculars and a Canna bird leaflet, they’ll have the chance to spot some of the island’s most captivating species.
Guests can take in breathtaking views of the peaks of Skye and Rum while enjoying a complimentary hot beverage midway through the walk. The route covers grass paths, which can become slippery after rain, so we recommend suitable footwear.
Perfect for visitors looking to experience Scotland’s natural and cultural treasures, this tour combines history, wildlife, and stunning scenery, making it an unforgettable addition to any itinerary.

One of our favourite places in all of the Hebrides to visit is the Canna Cafe, Gareth and his team there really are the best at what they do. Sourcing delicious wild and local ingredients to create fantastic food. Situated close to the landing slipway, it is the perfect place to stop off for some of their island-brewed beer at the end of your walk. Famous for its incredible, sustainable seafood, the Canna Cafe cookbook is also a delight.
If you are joining us as part of a whole boat booking in 2025, and would like to have dinner there, please let us know and we will get you booked in.
